In the Gospel according to John, we find Jesus engaged in a profound conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews. In this encounter, Jesus speaks of the necessity of being born again, of water and the Spirit, to enter the kingdom of God. He refers to an event from the Israelites’ history, when Moses lifted up the bronze serpent in the wilderness, foreshadowing His own lifting up on the cross. Jesus reveals that God’s love for the world is so great that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. However, He also exposes the reality that those who reject Him stand condemned already because they prefer darkness over light.
